Birmingham Carbon Savings – Environmental Partnership

25/05/2010
The Birmingham Environment Partnership are collecting data on carbon savings to compile the cities total.  They need this info as soon as possible so if you feel like giving this questionnaire a go, please  – copy and paste, fill it in and send it back to us.
  • Electricity saved:………………………………. kW/h
  • Natural gas saved:……………………………. kW/h
  • Water saved:……………………………………. litres
  • Waste saved:……………………………………. tonnes (if possible please specify type of waste e.g. paper and card; food waste; garden waste; wood; textiles; plastic; metal; soil; glass etc.)

(If possible include where the waste would have gone if it had not been saved e.g. landfill, incineration or incineration with energy capture. Also include any information about raw materials and transport miles saved due to reduced waste.)

  • Petrol saved:…………………………………… litres
  • Diesel saved:…………………………………… litres
  • Train travel saved:…………………………… miles
  • Air travel saved:………………………………. miles

2. How did your organisation make the savings?

  • Electricity and gas e.g. installing energy efficient lighting, using renewable fuel sources (e.g. solar panels, wind turbines etc.), increased insulation, using more energy efficient equipment and machinery, combined heat and power, district heating systems, staff behavioural changes (e.g. turning off lighting or equipment), lowering temperature on thermostat, energy efficient boiler etc.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

  • Water e.g. water efficient toilets, water recycling etc.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

  • Waste e.g. recycling, reuse, increased efficiency measures, reduced buying, increased onsite recycling, eco-design (e.g. using less material for packaging) etc.

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

  • Transport e.g. instead of taking a car staff did the following: car sharing, using public transport, walking, cycling, phone or video conferencing or using more fuel efficient vehicles. Other examples: using local suppliers, buying more locally, better coordination of deliveries etc.

Guidance notes:

  • If your organisation has not measured its savings please tell us of any estimates (making it clear that they are estimates) or tell us about any initiatives taken and we can estimate the savings.
  • Alternatively, if your organisation has data already calculated on its carbon savings then we can also use these.
  • Savings should result from actions taken between 1 April 2009 and 31 March 2010 unless these savings were not realised until this period. E.g. Energy efficient measures taken in March 2009 may only have resulted in savings in 09/10 so these can be included.
  • We are only collecting data on savings made. Do not include any increases in the use of electricity, water, waste or transport. The overall difference between 2008/09 and 2009/10 may therefore not be appropriate as it will include both savings and increases.
  • Please only include Birmingham-based carbon savings for your buildings, staff etc. in these calculations even if your organisation also operates outside of Birmingham.
