Interesting article in the Guardian

Mary Colwell wrote in the Guardian last week ‘Religion can succeed where the environment movement has failed‘ .  Her opening line ‘God isn’t someone who scares people into action.  His message is of hope not fear’ really grabbed my attention as I feel ‘hope’ as well as ‘commitment’ are the key messages of our project, Faith and Climate Change.

We want people to act because they love the planet and they want their communities to thrive.  We are working to support positive projects and this article really drives the message that fear and scare tactics will fail whilst messages of a positive vision and hope will result in action.

Lets hope we listen.

Excellent article. People interested in this topic, may want to go and see Karen Armstrong at the Birmingham Book Festival. She’s speaking on ‘What religion really means’ on 29 October at the Birmingham Conservatoire. A former nun she is now one of the world’s leading commentators on religious affairs and a passionate interfaith person (e.g. coordinating drafting of ‘Charter of Compassion’, by the end of 2009 to be signed by 1,000 leaders from Judaism, Christianity and Islam).
